Fairy Meadows Trek: What to Expect & How to Prepare
A complete insider guide to the mythical Fairy Meadows, the thrilling Raikot jeep track, alpine cabin stays, and day hikes to Nanga Parbat Base Camp.

Introduction to Fairy Meadows (Joot)
Known locally as Joot, Fairy Meadows is a high-altitude plateau situated at 3,300 meters right beneath the icy north face of Nanga Parbat. In the 1950s, German mountaineer Willy Merkl dubbed it 'Märchenwiese' (Fairy Tale Meadow) for its storybook alpine scenery of pine glades, wandering horses, and mountain reflections.
The Famous Raikot Jeep Ride
From Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, local drivers operate specially modified 4x4 Willys and Land Cruisers up a dramatic cliffside track carved into the sheer canyon walls of the Raikot gorge. The 90-minute ride ends at the village of Tatu, where the foot trail begins.
Trek from Tatu to Fairy Meadows
From Tatu, it is an enjoyable 3 to 4 hour uphill walk through fragrant pine and juniper forests. Horses or mules are available for anyone needing assistance or for transporting heavier duffel bags.
Beyal Camp & Nanga Parbat Base Camp
Once based at the meadows, a gentle 2-hour walk leads to Beyal Camp (3,500 m). For those with good stamina, continuing across the moraine brings you to the German Climbers Memorial Base Camp (3,967 m), putting you directly underneath Nanga Parbat's 4,000-meter wall of hanging glaciers.
Cabins, Food & Best Season
Several comfortable wooden resorts offer private log cabins equipped with wood-burning stoves ('bukhari') and hot water buckets. June to September offers warm sunny days and cool, crisp nights.
